HISTORY OF OPTICAL COATINGS

You can debate the origins of optical coatings but I like to think the first optical thin films were applied to the sarcophagi of pharaohs thousands of years ago. They weren't placed in a vacuum chamber and the gold wasn't evaporated and deposited but skilled artisans beat the very malleable material into very thin films and applied the films to sarcophagi partly for optical effect.

A good timeline about the history of vacuum and vacuum deposited coatings can be found on the Society of Vacuum Coaters website. Be sure to click the links at the left, there's some good information there. There are also some very interesting PDFs and one entitled Foundations of Vacuum Coating Technology you can download and read. Check it out!

COATING BREAKTHROUGH ACHIEVED!

With time running out and significant funding from the Turkey Producers of America a breakthrough has been made. Coaters Tech has successfully co-deposited IAD garlic infused oregano-sage-butter on turkeys just in time for Thanksgiving.

With a massive thermal butter evaporator array, butter was evaporated using open boats with a varying temperature throughout the deposition (40 degrees C higher for the first 30 minutes).

"We chose open boats because we didn't want to impede the transit of the butter vapour from the thermal evaporators to the substrate."

Working with material and equipment vendors Coaters Tech has perfected the butter coating on turkey. Using a newly developed flow controller specifically made for the controlled flow of garlic puree, ionized garlic bombards the coating during the co-deposition of the butter/spice coating. The stoichiometry is far superior than that of butter/spice coatings applied using conventional methods.

Quality assurance has done extensive testing. Unfortunately they have not been able to develop a testing process that is non-destructive.

"We are very satisfied with the testing results. Now if you'll excuse me, it's nap time."
